Studying in the USA on the Global UGRAD Student Exchange Program

Hi, my name is Anna Albert, I am a student at the Computer Systems and Networks Department.

In autumn 2018, I was fortunate enough to go to study in the US on the Global UGRAD student exchange program.

This international educational and cultural exchange program supports talented international students, empowers future leaders to study in the United States to deepen their knowledge and study of the culture and traditions of the United States of America.

Last year, 300 students from Ukraine took part in the competition and only 10 went.

After I applied for the program, she transferred me to the University of Arkansas, majoring in Computer Science.

Global UGRAD covered all expenses for accommodation, meals, travel to America, and also paid a $ 300 every month.

Four months in America have passed by very quickly, I want to share this experience.

About studying in the USA

In America, there is academic mobility that not only allows them to study their subjects, but also to take subjects from other faculties. So I studied data processing and interpretation, business communication. She chose Applied Cryptography from the profile subjects.

Global UGRAD requires a study of the subject of American culture, so I studied American culture for foreigners, which greatly increased my understanding of mentality and language.

We took exams twice during the semester: in October and December. It is very similar to our system with modular control robots. Only the form for answering the tests and the pen is allowed on the document. You cannot communicate with your colleagues, you will be expelled.

Students love to study together, they gather in the library, book study rooms there, and prepare for exams together.

The relationships with the teachers are very informal, you can ask about his family, talk about cinema news. And when you have questions about the subject, you can always come to office hours and ask all the questions.

Volunteering

Volunteering is a must-have part of a student’s life.

Each exchange student must work up to 30 hours in the Community Service (volunteer organizations). This is a must-have requirement for every student. I went to the Enactus Social Entrepreneurship Lab, where we, together with our students, took courses for senior Arkansas students. She was also part of the International Student Office, where she disseminated knowledge about Ukraine.

She organized a presentation about the Motherland, where she also treated the audience with national food.

At McMillon Innovation Studio, together with a team of volunteers, we worked on the problem of one of America’s largest supermarkets – Wallmart.

Student Life

In the US, every student has access to the library by 2am, and during the 24/7 exams, gyms are open since 6am till 11pm.

Students gather for interests. For example, there is a club of mathematicians, there is a club of readers, runners. On Sunday, everyone goes to church and the campus doesn’t work until lunch.

They are very responsible for the holidays, during Haloween the entire campus is decorated with pumpkins.

They have vacations, they last 3 days in mid-October.

In general, American students learn a lot, but are able to rest.

This experience has changed my outlook, broadened my outlook and inspired me to move on! I have also improved my academic skills.

I recommend all students to apply for the program!

Good luck!
